Gone are the days when you can eat whatever you want and ignore the labels on your food and drinks. Many people just tend to do that and complain later on when some complications suddenly pop up. Studies have already proven that what you eat can in fact harm the body not just because it doesn’t have the right nutrients but also because the wrong chemical component can trigger food allergies and other health problems. The best thing to do then is to become a well-informed consumer. Know what will harm and what will benefit you the most.
The general misconception is that by reading the label, you stop yourself from enjoying the food because you would most probably stop yourself from eating something that is toxic to your system. Contrary to that, reading labels and choosing food that are free from bad additives can be more satisfying because you would eat knowing that you will be full and yet you are safe from the bad effects of dangerous additives.
Going though labels can be a little confusing initially because you may rely on claims made by companies. A food with a label that says it is free from e-numbers may sound good to some but a closer look would leave you disappointed. There are many companies in the food industry that promises what it cannot deliver. The truth is, it is mostly unavoidable to be free from the use of additives because of their many benefits. Industries cannot afford to omit some additives from their ingredients because it preserves their products and it also enhances the flavor among many things. If the so-called commercial e-numbers free products exist, they wouldn’t last for long because they would most likely get spoiled.
As been said, the best thing to deal with enumbers in food is to choose carefully and read labels. Disregard whatever claim the packaging may say in the front and go straight to the label. In the ingredients, you would most likely see the chemical additives placed in the products. Know which additive should be avoided and which ones are declared safe for consumption by regulatory commissions.
An example of what to avoid is benzoic acid. This additive is still being used in dairy and meat products and it is also being used in cereals. The bad thing about benzoic acid is that it can disrupt the digestive process and can cause stomach upsets. It may also bring headaches and skin problems after consumption.
On the other hand, food that has propionic acid are okay to eat because studies have shown that they are one of the least dangerous food preservatives actively being used. It is mainly used in baked goods so as long as they used this additive as preservative; you don’t have anything to worry about anything.
Don’t take the complications of additives lightly because a simple food allergy can be very serious. Make sure that you are going to see a doctor if after you ate something, you discover that you are intolerant after all.
